What to do when someone dies
If death occurs in Hospital
The hospital staff will contact whoever is named as the next of kin. The hospital will inform the family how to register the death and will not allow your loved one to be moved until this has been done. Once registered, we can bring the deceased into our care. Adam & Greenwood Funeral Home has a Chapel of Rest in which the deceased will be looked after until the funeral.
If death occurs at home (an ‘expected death’)
You must contact the doctor, who attended the deceased during their final illness. Once the doctor has attended and informs you that the deceased can be moved, please contact the Adam & Greenwood Funeral Home and we will arrange for the deceased to be brought into our care.
If the doctor can certify the cause of death he/she will give you the following:
- A medical certificate that shows the cause of death (usually given in a sealed envelope addressed to the registrar)
- A formal notice that the doctor has signed the medical certificate and tells you how to register the death
- The doctor should advise you when and where these Certificates can be collected from their surgery.
